What is it? A preposition is a small word that shows where something is or when something happens: The cat is under the bed. School starts at nine.
Why does it matter? Prepositions help people find things and know when to come. "Your book is on the table" is much more helpful than "Your book is the table"!
Where do we use it? Giving directions, telling where things are, and talking about times, days and months.
